Temperatures drop, days get shorter, and your lawn’s water demand falls off significantly. If your controller is still running a July schedule in October, you’re overwatering — and overwatering in fall is exactly how you end up with brown patches, soggy spots, and a water bill that doesn’t make sense.
Let’s walk through what’s actually happening and what to do about it.
Florida has two seasons, and the line between them matters more than most people account for. The wet season runs from roughly June through September, bringing regular afternoon storms that quietly supplement whatever your irrigation system is doing. Then October arrives, the rain stops, and homeowners start worrying — but the worry usually points them in the wrong direction.
The issue isn’t that your lawn suddenly needs more water. It’s that the conditions driving water demand have changed. Cooler temperatures mean less evaporation. Shorter days mean slower grass growth. St. Augustinegrass — the turf in most Citrus County yards — is pulling back, not pushing forward. Running your sprinklers at summer frequency into fall doesn’t help it. It stresses it in a different way.
Most people associate lawn problems with not enough water. But in Citrus County’s fall transition, the far more common culprit is too much. When you keep a summer schedule running — say, every two to three days at 30 to 40 minutes per zone — into October and November, you’re creating the exact conditions that gray leaf spot and brown patch fungal diseases thrive in.
High humidity, reduced airflow, and saturated soil are a recipe for turf disease, and St. Augustinegrass is particularly vulnerable. What makes this tricky is that the damage doesn’t always look like overwatering. It looks like drought stress — yellowing blades, thinning patches, areas that seem to be dying off despite regular irrigation. So the homeowner’s instinct is to water more, which makes the problem worse.
By the time the fungal damage is obvious, it’s already spread. The fix is counterintuitive: water less, not more. UF/IFAS recommends no more than ¾ inch of water per irrigation event for Florida lawns, and in fall, the frequency should drop significantly from summer levels.
A general rule of thumb used by irrigation professionals is to reduce zone run times from 30–40 minutes down to 15–20 minutes per zone, and cut back to once every 10–14 days as temperatures cool further into winter. That’s a significant change from what most controllers are set to.
There’s also the water bill angle. Outdoor irrigation accounts for up to 50% of residential water use in Florida. If your bill spiked in October and you can’t explain why, the answer is almost certainly that your irrigation system is running on a schedule that made sense four months ago but doesn’t anymore. The system doesn’t know what season it is — that’s your job, or your contractor’s.
This is where the stakes get real. It’s not just about your lawn — it’s about compliance. The Southwest Florida Water Management District declared a Modified Phase III “Extreme” Water Shortage for Citrus County, and those restrictions are currently extended through October 1, 2026. That means the rules aren’t suggestions.
Under the current Phase III order, irrigation for properties under one acre is limited to one day per week, and watering hours are restricted to 12:01 a.m. to 4 a.m. or 8 p.m. to 11:59 p.m. No landscape irrigation is allowed between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Citrus County’s own mandatory ordinance layers on top of the SWFWMD rules, adding an address-based day assignment — the last digit of your address number determines which day of the week you’re allowed to water.
If your controller is running on a schedule that was set up before any of this was in place, there’s a real chance you’re watering on the wrong day, at the wrong time, or both. That’s not a technicality — it’s an enforceable violation.
A lot of homeowners genuinely don’t know their assigned watering day or what the current hour windows are. The rules have changed more than once in recent years, and the SWFWMD’s 13.7-inch rainfall deficit that triggered the Phase III declaration isn’t something most people track. But “I didn’t know” doesn’t prevent a fine, and it doesn’t fix a lawn that’s been overwatered or under-managed all season.

Drip irrigation delivers water directly to the root zone of plants, which eliminates the evaporation, wind drift, and overspray that happen with overhead sprinkler heads. For planting beds, shrubs, and trees — which make up a significant portion of most Citrus County landscapes — drip is simply more efficient. It uses 30–50% less water than traditional sprinklers, and it keeps foliage dry, which matters a lot when you’re trying to prevent fungal disease in fall.
Sprinkler systems, on the other hand, are the right tool for open turf areas. Trying to cover a large St. Augustinegrass lawn with drip emitters doesn’t make practical sense. The professional standard for most residential properties is a hybrid system: rotary or spray heads for the lawn, drip or micro-irrigation for beds and plantings.
If your current irrigation system only has spray or rotor heads — no drip zones — and you have established garden beds, shrubs, or trees, then yes, adding drip is worth considering. Not just for water efficiency, but for the health of the plants themselves.
Overhead watering on planting beds wastes water two ways: a significant portion evaporates before it reaches the roots, and the rest often runs off sandy Citrus County soil before it can absorb. Sandy soil drains quickly by nature, which is one of the reasons irrigation design here needs to be more precise than in other parts of Florida. Water applied too fast or in the wrong place simply disappears below the root zone.
Drip emitters solve both problems. They deliver water slowly and directly, which gives sandy soil time to absorb it at the root level. They also keep moisture off foliage, which reduces the conditions that promote fungal disease — particularly relevant in fall when humidity stays elevated even as temperatures drop.
From a compliance standpoint, drip irrigation is also easier to keep within SWFWMD’s current restrictions. Because it uses significantly less water per cycle, you can maintain healthy plantings without pushing against your one-day-per-week limit. The irrigation controller is the brain of your system — and it’s only as good as the programming it’s running. Most residential controllers in Citrus County are set once, usually during installation or at the start of summer, and then left alone. The homeowner figures it’s working, so there’s no reason to touch it. That logic holds up fine during the wet season when rain is doing most of the work anyway. But once October hits and the rain stops, whatever schedule is in that controller becomes the only thing standing between your lawn and either drought stress or overwatering.
The problem is that standard timer-based controllers don’t know what season it is. They don’t know it rained last Tuesday. They don’t know that your St. Augustinegrass is growing half as fast as it was in August. They just run the schedule you gave them, on repeat, indefinitely.
Florida law (Statute 373.62) requires all automatic irrigation systems installed after May 1, 1991, to include a rain sensor or other automatic shutoff device. A functioning rain sensor is the minimum — it stops the system from running during active rainfall. But it doesn’t adjust your schedule for seasonal changes, and it doesn’t account for the reduced water demand that comes with cooler fall temperatures.
Smart irrigation controllers — weather-based or soil-moisture-based models — take this further. They pull real-time data and adjust run times automatically based on current conditions. For a homeowner who genuinely doesn’t want to think about seasonal reprogramming, a smart controller is the most reliable long-term solution. It keeps the system compliant with SWFWMD restrictions, adjusts for seasonal demand shifts, and prevents the overwatering that causes fungal disease in fall.
